How to use the Library catalogue

The Library Catalogue is available on terminals in the LRCs, and online.

It enables you to search the entire stock of the libraries on all sites.

It will tell you whether the item you require is immediately available (or on loan/ at another site/ still on order).

If it is not immediately available, you can reserve it through the Your Account facility. (If it is not listed, please contact library staff. We will do our best to obtain it for you)

To access Your Account:

Enter your student ID as User ID
Enter your date of birth* in the format dd/mm/yyyy as your PIN number

(* If you have trouble at this point, please contact your site LRC)

Your Account - will give you details of:

  • all items currently on loan to you
  • all items you have reserved (and if they are now in)

You can use My Account to reserve and renew. (You can renew once only if the item has not been reserved by another user)

To Reserve - after searching the catalogue for the required item, click on "Request Item".

To Renew - find the list of books on loan to you (via Account Overview or Checked Out), tick the box (on the left-hand side) of the titles you want to renew and click on "Renew". (If the item has been reserved by another user, or if you have renewed online before, you will be told "Renew Failed".)

Searching the Catalogue

Choose from Basic or Advanced

  • Basic - allows you to search by a particular approach - Author / Class / ISBN / Subject / Series / Title. (The Subject Keyword search allows you to search for a particular word in the Subject term - eg a Subject Keyword search for "Women" would retrieve material on various subject terms - women artists, women's history, the psychology of women, etc. The Title Keyword search similarly allows you to find titles containing a particular word - a useful approach if you can't remember the precise title you are looking for.) The search will retrieve a list of titles. Click on any one title for full details - publisher, date, number of pages, etc. and whether immediately available - ie "IN" rather than "ON LOAN","ON ORDER", "BEING HELD", etc.
  • Advanced - allows a more precise search - you can search through several title fields at once. The more words you enter into various fields (Author, Title, Subject, etc), the more precise the result. You can also Limit the Search here - ie by location, format, etc. (You can even retrieve the most up-to-date titles by specifying publication after a particular date, for instance.)

All searches can be kept as lists and e-mailed and printed.

Further help is available via the help option at the top of the screen, and from staff in the LRCs.
